Default Major Pipe Band Championship in England

Just wanted to say how great it is having a major (The British Pipe Band Championship) on English soil again.

The venue, at Canon Hill park in Birmingham, will be a great success I'm sure and give a lot of English bands a chance to compete with some of Britain's top bands in their grades.

I will have finished my time here in Canada by then so I'll definately be there. Hopefully the weather should be ok as it's at the end of June (kiss of death ).

Looking forward to it already!

Regards

Yep. Corby was always a good contest. I attended for two or three years with Roddy (Good Drying) MacDonald when we were both living in London. He didn't drive at the time so I would pick him up on the way. The solo piping judge was Robert S Brown, son of Bob Brown of the Bobs of Balmoral fame. I believe that Robert S Brown was apprenticed as a gardener at Balmoral but later moved to London. I cannot recall what his job was in London. He was a great player but for some reason never seemed to compete. I'm not sure if he is still with us. Last I heard, which is a good few years back, he was living in Welling in Kent. There was always a Ceilidh after the Corby contest in The Grampian Social Club. Corby was of course a 'steel town' and when built was populated by steelworkers from the west of Scotland towns such as Motherwell, Bellshill etc.

So did I, but obviously piping and pipe bands in England is of limited interest to members of these boards! England have over the years managed to produce the odd championship band accross the grades e.g. Guards Piping School, Clan Sutherland, and at one point a significant number of the B Cal band were based in the South of England and used to fly up to Glasgow weekly for practices.

Birmingham landing this championship is good news, I'm sure it will be a great success. I've always been surprised that there aren't more pipe-bands in England when you consider the number of Scots based in the South. Maybe the majority are too busy running the country to have any spare time for piping.

ED

Perhaps since you have previously played in G1 & G2 and are not currently with a pipe band you could assist one of the southern bands who are toiling away to actually produce pipers and better their standard of playing; to do just that and be a bit of a team player???
