Before our modern method of art school, a lot of painting students were encouraged to make copies of everything from the great masters to lesser known works in order to practice color mixing, brushstrokes, basic technique etc. So, multiple copies in a school, left behind by students wouldn't be unusual at all.
Until relatively recently, you could get a permit to set up an easel in the Detroit Institute of Art and copy a painting if you wished. I can see why they banned wet oil paint from the museum, but you can still get a drawing/sketching permit.
The other thing that bothers me in the original photo post was the lighting glare. An auction house should know better. Set two lights at 45 degree angles to the work to avoid glare.
Before you start fixing problems with your reeds, check to see if the bag or stocks are leaking.
