Default Piper dies from bagpipe bag germs

Doctors say playing bagpipes killed man:
http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/scotlan...-after-8681708

The question is, how many pipers out there have unknowingly gotten a little sick—but not died—from their pipes? None? A few? Many?

The other question is what should be a cleaning regimen be? What bag was he plying? Synthetic? Hide?

Inquiring minds want to know...

One of the senior pipers in my band told me that years ago his clack was misbehaving so took out the blowpipe to give the leather valve a chew. On seeing white mould on the surface his wife stopped him. On further inspection, the white mould was wriggling with tiny worms

Though I do have to wonder what the direction of causality is; how can we know it didn't get blown into the bag?

Not that cleaning your instrument once in a while is a bad idea.

Whether we know how it got into the bag or not, a little anti-bacterial/anti-fungal spray or wipe down once a month (or more depending on the amount of playing time you do) on the inside of the bag and around the blow pipe will keep this stuff at bay!
