Excuse my ignorance please, but whatís the difference between a straight cut and ridge cut reed? Iíve not come across these in my rather short piping life. And which does the G1 Platinum fall into?

You can google G1,Troy,Shepherd,pipeDreams, etc..and get a first hand education to bolster your comeuppance. 👌👍

Hagrid, Iíll show you some when we are all back at band practice... I tend to use moulded in my solo chanter and G1s in my band chanter

The little experience I had with ridge cut reeds was the Warnocks we used in band and they were loud and trumpety compared to the molded reeds I much prefer.

Not sure if the other ridge cut brands are any different. But that was my only experience with them.

For years, I played G1s and then Shepherd ridge cuts, and then I got a few belter MacPhees that made me remember why people play molded reeds.

"Ah. So piobaireachd G doesn't actually have to sound like a dustbuster after all."

I still have a couple of good MacPhees silo'd off in climate-controlled conditions should I ever have need of them.

Last year, I got a few easy Troy "McAllister" reeds. When I first put one in my Colin Kyo chanter, it had a bit of a metallic "zing" to the tone... After a few careful sweeps with fine sandpaper, it sounded fantastic. A friend of mine who is a fixture of local Highland dancing comps here says he's been playing the same Troy reed for well over a decade. Not sure if mine will last quite that long, but so far, so good...
