Default Flat F question

I have a Sound supreme reed, I love it, however the F note is prone to double toning, it does this on all of my chanters.

Fortunately it does go away after a gentle squeeze, helps the other flat notes too, of which are not as bad.

Question is, should this go away after setting in?

P.S. One thing I will also note, is that it sits very far into the reed seat, which I hear can also cause erratic tuning, I will add some hemp tomorrow.

Yes, try lifting the reed a bit. It is counterintuitive but sometimes seems to work on F. I am not sure why but have heard plausible theories about a spectral gap in the sound produced by the reed. Also, if the metal staple touches the reed seat it seems to cause F issues.

Good luck figuring it out.

Yes, if the reed is seated too far into the chanter it can give you issues.

Only thing I'd say there, is if you have HA and LA balanced you could try to trim the tips of the reed. Microns remember! This should sort the flat F. The thing that is getting me is that you say its double toning So could be a combination of small things - reed to far into chanter / reed too long / reed mouth to closed?

Sorry I'm not much help, I'd have to be there really to give any solid advice.

In my experience there are two main things that cause the dreaded double toning F. Mouth too open or the blades are too long.

You said squeezing it shut helps. Chances are it will always tend to open up as you are playing so it could be an ongoing problem. You can solve it with a small dental rubber band wrapped twice around the middle of the reed blades. That should stop it from opening up.

The other option and my personal favorite is to clip the reed tips a very very small amount. Literally just a hair at a time until the F is at the proper pitch.

You can buy these clippers at most Sear's stores or even online, they are perfect for the job and use regular old utility razor blades. Great tool to have in your reed adjusting kit.

Chris, is that just an ordinary wood chisel you are using there?

Adding more hemp did indeed help! It even sounded more crisp and brighter!

I did trim the tips, but the reeds were done after that I think I took off too much.

I ordered some more though.

It's what was left of one! Ended up about 1 inch long after hundreds of visits to my sharpening stone. Moved onto a new one now.
