Many years ago at a College of Piping summer school...Seumas MacNeill instruct us to use the least amount of pressure and touch the chanter only when necessary when playing. Specifically, he told us to imagine the chanter as the most foul, smelly thing we could imagine.

Yes, I think we've all heard the various metaphors about how to hold (or barely hold) the PC. I believe that was the original poster's point in that he found it difficult to do same when not supported by a table or some surface.
Regarding the light hold--and an exercise that did require support--I used to run band through exercises with the right thumb off the PC entirely. That, and others, are fun exercises. The difficulty sometimes comes in transferring that light hold to the actual pipe chanter, especially during competition or other nerve-testing situations!! |

If you'll have a look at the link I posted at the top it leads to a thumbrest which can be installed on the PC, and upon which the the PC can hang from the right thumb with no gripping at all
