Does anyone know how to fix that rumbling gurgly sound caused by a Rocket reed in the bass?

hmmm...
if manipulating the reed bridle does not cure the rumble... you might contact Mark Lee... there are several makes of pipes that his reeds (especially bass) do not go well with... usually narrow bores, I think... contacting him will verify and/or get the information of what bottom bass section bore size he wants... and then you have a decision... go to the maker or respected maker/repair person and request the bore size change... or keep the unchanged specs of your makers pipes and find another reed brand... (perhaps Mark can cite brands and/or specs?) Cheers Richard Mao, The Peking Piper ( richardmao@rocketmail.com ) Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you. Ralph Waldo Emerson |

If the bore of the bass bottom joint is small compared to the bore of the middle joint, any stiff-bladed reed can be a dodgy proposition.
For example, a 5/16 bottom bore with a 7/16 middle bore is not a good match with my bass reed. A piper can get around this, somewhat, by tuning about one finger off the bottom mount and well out on the top mount. I measured a new, 2008, P. Henderson pipe at the Ohio Games and found the bass bottom was 7.5 mm while the bass middle was 10.3 mm - not good proportions for my bass reed. Compare to Sinclair pipes made after about 1995 having a bottom bore of 8.6 mm and bass middle of 10.6 mm - not only a good match for my bass reed but just about any bass reed. Compare to pre-1920 Henderson bass drone with bottom bore of 23/64 and middle bore of 7/16 - a good match for just about any bass reed. In my experience, bass bottoms of 8 mm and 5/16-inch are just on the cusp of go/no go depending on the bore of the bass middle, tuning chamber bore and depth, bass top bore and bush. For that matter, 21/64 can be on the cusp if a .719 tuning chamber is bored deeper than four inches. Mark |

Jumping back on this as I have been monkeying around alot with Rockets and Kinairds lately ---
Both reeds will motorboat when they are being blown under the proper pressure. This became more evident the last two weeks when students and guys getting back in after a long layout were having this problem. I would just pick up the pipes and steady on. Jim |

Regulator valves can adversely affect stiff-bladed reeds.

Mark,
Would that include Shepherd tone enchancers or just valve types? The piper that had been out for a while had the tone enchancers in. As he was a really good piper before he layed off 4 -5 years ago,I had him take them out and the problem went away. Wasn't sure if it was because I adjusted them again or not. Thanks, Jim |
