Default Pipe Bands in LAs Cruces, New Mexico area

What bands if any are there in the LAs Cruces NEw MExico area? I guess that could include El PAso, TX.

Albuquerque NM: Mac-Tire of Skye Pipes and Drums. Non competitive and focusing on putting on the best show with the best music that connects with an audience. As many 15 pipes & 6 drums at the big gigs.

They have a high school in El Paso that has bagpipes (they have a Highlander Mascot). Bel Air HS, I believe. The band makes an appearance every couple of years at the games in Albuquerque. It's kind of tough for them, because it's after the end of the school year. The band is almost always all grls as well, very different.

I think some of the alumnus put together a band as well. If I recall, they played at Rio Grande Celtic festival in Albuquerque a few years ago (can't remember if they competed).

At one time, there was a group getting started down around the Deming/Roswell (insert alien joke here), but I don't recall hearing anything from them for quite a while.

So it is like everything else down there. Mostly a desert with some signs of life struggling to hang on.

My first teacher was a woman in El Paso named Mahrla Manning - she was the PM for the bel-air HS pipe band and had her own band at the time as well, Empyre Pipes and Drums I believe. She was a great teacher and got me started off on the right foot - I'm sure she leads her bands as effectively as she teaches. I wish I still had her email, but it should be too hard to find. Good luck!

That's the name, and the band I was trying to remember! I was thinking Mara, but knew that wasn't right. Nice lady, taking on a real challenge.

Wasn't there a high desert Pipe band from Albuquerque? How far is Albuquerque from Las Cruces?

There was - is -. Also a shrine band, a Santa Fe band and one farther north. Las Cruces is 3.5-4 hours depending.

I thought there was a Shrine band in Cruces back in the early 80's, I use to live in Alamo and remember some of the guys from our Masonic Lodge going to Cruces for the Shrine Activities. I've lost track of those guys but there should be some of the pipers still around there. Best of Luck.

It is under consideration. I will be visiting in the first week of June to look around
