Gents/Ladies
It's that time again when I get to spend money on a new pair of Bass Sticks. I don't spend money without comparison shopping and also like to gather information. Any input here is appreciated; Which Brand of Bass Stick do you prefer and for what reasons? Thanks, Lance Dahl Kentucky United P&D Lexington, KY |

My daughter has been playing for a long time, and her favorite, by far, are her M&G sticks. She has played the same pair for a few years now. They are weighted nicely, and have a comfortable handle. The density of the heads allows for great dynamics when hitting the drum.

I've played a variety of mallets..
For a while the original M&Gs seemed ideal. Then the fellow who designed M&Gs stopped making them. Someone else started doing them but they don't sound the same. About that time I moved to Mike Cole's Twisted Thistle mallets. They have a clean, defined attack with a nice sustain with my bass and performed better than anything I've tried. Alas, even the best mallets don't last forever. I need a new set.. if Mistah Cole ever starts making them again..

Its funny...I bought a set of Twisted Thistles from Mike...while I personally love them (but I dont play much), my daughter really dislikes them, and wont play them, cause she said they are too hard. I also think the TT handle is super comfortable, while she dislikes the feel. Its not a straight stick, its tapered nicely. I like the feel of the larger wood in my palm, with the tapered top near the head.
(oh, her M&G's are originals, Hugh Cameron is making them now)... Another one she told me to mention are Jamie's from Mayor Drum Supply. Of all the sticks she tried, those were the closest to the M&Gs, (at a much better price). They have a mid density, and a straight handle, with the grooves in them. I suggest just asking around if you can play a tune with different peoples mallets!! (I know, easier said than done) Good luck!!! |

I've been using Andante mallets for years ... nice feel and weight, very comfortable, get great tone (out of several different drums, BTW) with them, and they've held up really well over a long period of time.
That said, yes it would be nice to experiment with other models and compare, but yes they're so expensive! (And if you don't use your Twisted Thistles much and want to part with them, I'll be glad to make you an offer ....)

I'm with Hossman!
MDM - legit. I'm a Gold Medal bass drummer and I'd never hit the field with anything but MDM. World class, reliable, sound phenomenal, comfortable, reasonable price and hand made so you're getting super quality. Hit up Mayor Drum Supply's website and check them out. |
