Museum of Art and Le Virtù: We are proud to announce that we are again supporting the Abruzzese folk troupe Discanto during their April 2012 visit to the Philadelphia area. This year's tour includes a singular event at the Philadelphia Museum of Art that will take place on April 6th as part of the museum's "Art After 5" program. April 6th marks the third anniversary of the earthquake that destroyed Abruzzo's capital city of L'Aquila. The band will play in honor of the city and region, and a simultaneous slide show will present images of L'Aquila; this will be DisCanto's second performance at the museum. DisCanto's powerful, vivacious and sometimes raucous music expresses and evokes more profoundly than any other voice the soul of Abruzzo. This promises to be a memorable occasion not to be missed. About DisCanto DisCanto (www.discanto.net) is a group of Italian conservatory-trained musicians specializing in the music of Abruzzo's farmers and shepherds. Acclaimed in their home country and frequently featured on RAI television and radio, the group has played throughout the Philadelphia region and the northeastern U.S., including live performances on WXPN and World Cafe Live. This is their seventh visit to the U.S. and second appearance at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. DisCanto reinterprets traditional Abruzzese and ethnic southern Italian song through contemporary and traditional instrumentation. They explode preconceptions about traditonal Italian music. The songs, sung in dialect, evoke the wild Apennines that have defined Abruzzo's culture and cover historical themes of celebration, mourning, struggle - against nature, injustice and poverty. They also reflect the diverse range of influences that have played a role in Abruzzo's history. See you there |
