What's interesting is that they are not using conventional fingering, or drones, so they are clearly deliberately creating a completely different sound from what we are used to hearing, with a lot of the atonal and disonnant sounds typical of music of that region of the world. In other words, they seem to have adapted the pipes to their regional style of music.

Tunes is right. Each "piper" was playing something completely different... or they were totally out of sync. Same, same.

Yes, music. What is "musical" is completely created inside your brain after you are born; there is no external reference by which you can judge something. Play them Field Marshal and they would find it dry and insipid.

I'm not saying I like it - indeed, I struggle to watch the whole thing. But just dismissing it outright is ignorant.

These people seem to specialize in using exotic instruments for their own folk idioms. Here they are using the clarinet as if it was a nagaswara:

Can anybody locate a performance of the pipe band's tune on the instruments it was originally meant for?

Anyone read Arabic? Based on the phone numbers scrolling across the bottom of the screen, I'm guessing this is "Pakistan's Got Talent!". The top number is for "You Rule!" and the bottom number is for "Off with their heads!"

I don't mind styles of music, but it has to sound musical.

What Jack linked to was good music. Listening to that pipe band is not pleasing to the ear; there's atonal music and then there's cacophonous noise.
