The Kilberry Collection seems like a great deal for the $$$. Hard bound, with lots of chunes - for aboot $45 from some retailers.
Is this a "must have" for the big music, like Scots Guards is for the Light? Is there a better Piobaireachd "first book" out there?

If you buy the kilberry, you'd best get the 'Sidelights' and 'Further Sidelights' which better explain the tunes. The settings in Kilberry aren't all that accurate, and the additional books really round out the tunes.
As an alternative, you should start buying the PS series two or three at a time - better settings, alternative sources. If you start with Book 8 you'll get the newer settings by Archie Kenneth, and wait for the new series of 1-7 to come out. There probably won't be many, if any, changes in Book 4, which has most of the short tunes, so you could go ahead and get that one now. |
