How many grade competitions can a band enter at one event? Could, for example, a grade 1 band enter at grade 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 and clean up?
That certainly wouldn't be ethical, but are there rules to prevent this from happening? How about with solo piping? Having not yet advanced beyond "Senior Amateur", I've never needed to know. -NHH

I can't imagine why a band would do that. When you register your band with your home association it is classified by grade, so entering another grade to "clean up" would not be allowed.
I'm fairly certain as well that when you register with your home association as a solo player you are also classified by grade.

a band can compete up in the mwpba if there are three other bands competing in the higher grade. i know that, springfield did it at the st. louis games last year.

The original question dealt with players/bands from higher grades playing DOWN, not going up. And Drew's correct, there are rules in place to prevent that from happening.
Occasionally, there will be a band or soloist who is really performing above grade level during the season and yeah...they'll clean up. But most of the time their association is aware of it, and makes the correct adjustments. BTW, I heard that Coyne Memorial (a grade 2 pipe band) played up at the grade 1 contest at Pomona because there was no grade 2 event. They finished third out of three bands. - Bob Brodie |

I think that most associations stipulate that you may only enter in one grade.

You would hope that a Championship band in Grade 4, lets say.....when advanced to Grade 3 the next year, should be running in about the 25%tile. You would hope they would be running in the 50%tile to be secure in the next Grade. Cheers, Doc Cheers, Doc

I am not sure about bands, but I do believe in solos pipers stay in grade IV too long when they should probably be in the next grade.
