Michael, Scott, Bogus and Mitch,
Would you also like me to tell the wedding party I'm playing for tomorrow to get stuffed? - they've asked me to play "Amazing Grace" at their wedding! And on Saturday, I'm doing a funeral, and they want me to play the deceased's favorite tune, "Highland Wedding" The Lady Piper

No lady, I think you are misunderstanding our message.....Rod Stewart tunes on the bagpipes are just.....uncomplimentary to the GHB. Playing pipe tunes for whatever reason is totally cool...no matter who requests them and why, I think some of us just have a problem with un-pipeband tunes...although AG is was not originally written for the GHB...it has been adpoted as one.
I just find....and I may be alone on this, that playing "pop tunes" or the mexican hat dance type of tunes....is just unflattering to the instrument and puts piping and pipers in a position to be ridiculed and the butt of jokes and pranks. We don't need that kind of attention!

Although I wouldn't play it eitther, but mitch really, isn't any anttention that my expose the non playing public good attention. It may result in a person thinking that the Pipes are a "stuffy old fogies instrument" can be quiet "cool". Once you have them learning then they can be taught about the "acceptable/unaccesptable" music to play.
Just a Thought

My God. I wish I could increase the font to, like, 200 pts and scream... NO! NO! NO! What a horrible statement!

Lady Piper, if I were you, I would just use some discretion. Some of us have had this argument before, about what are proper pipe tunes, and in this case, whether playing funky tunes are being disrespectful to the music and the instrument. We cannot seem to reach a consensus. Generally, I would not recommend playing pop tunes on the pipes, but I can think of wonderful exceptions, like the Mull of Kintyre. I do not know about this particular Rod Stewart tune, though I personally would not want to hear the other Rod Stewart songs on the pipes. Having said that, if the hosts really want it and do not seem to mind, then there is no reason why you should not play it for their sake. True, it could sound sacrilegious, but again, that depends on the audience. If you are sure that the person requesting this song did not do it just for the sake of making you look like a fool...then go for it! As for 'illegal' notes, I am playing a tune with F Naturals plus an even more blatantly 'illegal' time signature! For those who have a bone to pick with me about this, let me just say that the origin of this tune is in a geographical region from where the predecessors of the GHB originated!

Ok Lady Piper, here's what I would do:
Lie and say it wouldn't work on pipes. Piper's are desperately short on respect, and I think playing whatever it is that they would want would turn you into the clown. That is the last thing pipers as a group of musicians and artists need. Here in the northwest, pipers are few and far between, and their numbers are dwindling. I personally think that this is due to bagpipes being seen as an exotic and silly thing. It's up to you, but think about how the guests will view you if you decide to play the request. You will make the right decision... (jedi mind trick) micah

I say do whatever you want to do. Some, if not most, of the people on these forums (from the look of this thread) need to seriously just chill out. Anyways, if you want to, play it, if you don't, then don't!

Since when did the bagpipe stop being a musical instrument? Isn't a musical instrument made to produce music? Is my music and your music different? Obviously if your trying to play something that is out of the range of your instrument (bagpipes?) and you're having to butcher the song to make it work then bypass that song. If the song works then play it. If you can make Do you think I'm Sexy sound good on the pipes go for it, you never can tell 20 years down the road it may be a bagpipe classic. I believe I heard the Flintstone tune played the other day on pipes, it's a silly song and not one you would expect, but the song played well on the pipes. There's a lot of Celtic Rock music floating around that has pipes included. This is bringing a lot of attentions from the younger crowd that is showing that this is not a stuffed shirt instrument. Anyone who has ever picked one up and tried to even make a sound knows this instrument is no joke to play. You see the ads ever day " bought this to play but found out it takes more than I'm willing to give, sell cheap".
We need to ease off, if it plays well on the pipes, you and others enjoy listening to it then play it. If you have to butcher it to make it work the pass it by. The non classic tunes of today may be the classics of tomorrow. Remember, we're having fun doing this. |
