  • Edinburgh Tattoo’s house band looks to drum up recruits for 2019

The event’s house band, Pipers Trail, has opened applications for 2019 recruits, following the success of their first global tour last year.

    information

New recruits are being called on from all corners of the globe with the opportunity to perform at the annual Tattoo spectacle in the iconic shadow of Edinburgh Castle.

They’ll also have the chance to travel the globe to international ceremonies and piping events.

    Cheers! Phil

It's the way the Tattoo is headed sadly...it's become a mostly civvy show as far as the Piping is concerned and some of the other filler groups are dodgy as to whether they belong in this kind of show at all..I stopped going years ago and so have many I know in the UK..it appears that they are intent on growing this house band group who are expected to get there on their own..a nice opportunity for those who want to do it but if the organizers were honest they would remove the word Military from the title...truth in advertising.

I was impressed by photos I saw of the Piper's Trail kit.

      Gives a nice professional look.

If I could afford to take off months from work and live in Edinburgh I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Here's an older thread about Piper's Trail where I post the band list from a couple different Tattoos showing the overwhelming erosion of the number of military pipe bands in recent years.

From their own press releases, they've gone from 27 members in 2014 to a planned 75 members in 2019...you can see where this is going...

Should it still be called the "Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo"?

That pipers' trail band appears competent and professional, if only they would get rid of the silly looking wee blue and white hackle in their glengarries. They'd look far better with blackcock feathers.

                Greetings to All,

Presuming... that the organizers are not... working "in the
red"... at a deficit... loosing money... but are actually... "in
the black"... and showing some vague sort of profit (For
otherwise... how has it continued?)... then I would hazard
that... some form of stipend... for those pipe band members
in The Pipers Trail...would be... the equitable... path to follow...

But and alas... "labor relations"... being what they usually
are... this might be... much too grand a hope.

While... and most certainly... not wishing to stir up any sort
                of controversy... just a thought...

                Regards to All,

                Pip01

I absolutely agree. When I did the Tattoo, we were paid - soldier's wages, not musicians, which was hardly excessive - and all found, and I am not especially impressed at exploiting the prestige of the event to get players to perform for nothing, indeed, in most cases at a net loss.

The Tattoo raises money for charity, not for profit, but it has a very healthy surplus and I find their use of free labour quite cynical.

I doubt the lighting crew are volunteering their services.

It's getting less "military" all the time.

                    In 2000 there were:

7 pipe bands from UK regiments

8 pipe bands from Dominions regiments

4 military bands from UK regiments.

                    In 2017 there were:

3 pipe bands from UK regiments

                    1 pipe band from OTC

2 pipe bands from Australian police departments

                    5 civilian pipe bands

3 military bands from UK regiments

1 military band from the USA

                    1 military band from Japan.

                      Greetings to All,

I would hazard... I would hope... that the "producers"
of the show... even accounting for different venues...
would compensate (read... pay those pipers and
drummers in The Trail... the same as they pay those
on the lighting crews (and at the very least).

                      Seems... only... fair...
