  • tDCS?

Before anyone thinks I'm some kind of nutjob I want to be clear that I did not purchase this device, nor am I advocating for it.

I just received a brand new Halo Sport 2 tDCS device through work. The idea is that wearing the device for 20min each day primes your brain to improve muscle learning and memory for up to an hour. To oversimplify the science it basically sends electrical impulses to certain parts of your brain through a series of wet electrodes. This is the same headset all the Olympians are wearing and despite the crazy concept the research suggests it does improve endurance and sport training. tDCS is also supposed to help with overcoming emotional trauma, PTSD and depression.

What I found interesting is that there is a setting for non-athletic performance improvement that specifically targets those learning to play instruments or other fine motor skill activities.

I am sceptical of anything that claims to make you a better athlete or musician but since I already have it I'm going to wear it before practicing and working out for a couple weeks to see how I feel. If nothing else it will give my family and gym mates something to laugh about.

Does anyone have any personal experience with this type of technology?

In short, and with the skepticism applied, I think of "placebo effect". That said, there are stimuli applied in cases of PTSD and other syndromes that have some electrical stimulation involving the brain. One well studied technology is EMDR--Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing--that works in certain cases. But improving "muscle learning and memory"? No. It's more related to moving traumatic memories from the amygdala to the frontal cortex for discussion. Most memorize is different ways, and apply that individually, The best approach is to utilize what works for you and utilize repetition to cement. Obviously, I'm not a fan of suck devices. But in the end, whatever works!

I'm right there with you. It could be another high priced "performance enhancer" that folks believe will work because their favorite athlete uses it. I'm reminded of how many athletes had cupping marks at the 2016 Olympics and then seeing these headsets show up at the 2020 (2021) Olympics.

        Greetings to All,

With both this... and all such... devices... and fads...
I do not... and shall not... have any contact.

Still and again... that Old Saw... but with New Teeth...
looms large... Practice... Practice!!... PRACTICE!! :-)

And as is... oft times the case... the easiest road...
the most convenient road... to achieving any goal...
is not... oft times... the most efficacious...

Tussle with it... get tore in... and then... achieve!!

Regards... and Good Fortune... to All,

        Pip01

        My friends all know,
        With what a brave carouse...

I don't for a second believe the effect can be large, but I can be persuaded that it's not zero. Like most of these things, it's probably only of values after sorting out a quality practice routine, regular instruction, and quality immersion.

That said, I'm quite sure there are competing pipers who are taking Adderal or the like when learning their tunes.

Did they mention if it also works as a water trap?

This is a solid point... Just like Epo and testosterone may make me faster but they sure as hell won't turn me into the next Lance Armstrong...

Any benefit from a device like this will certainly not be enough to turn a lazy novice into Willie McCallum or Bruce Gandy.

Most performance enhancing/doping gains are measured in miniscule percentages that are only noticed at the most extreme edge of what's possible.

It sounds akin to electrode therapy used for major depression, and Parkinson’s disease. On the surface one might be skeptical that it would provide improvements to someone without the limitations the therapy it’s designed to address but who knows. It’ll be interesting to hear back from you as to your findings.
