        Re: Maxville champions announcement kerfuffle

        To be painstakingly clear:

D-16 Method of Determining Winning Positions in Contests

D-16.1 Ranking Method. Winning positions at all competitions shall be determined by a ranking method as follows:
        (a) Each Judge's preference will be ranked in order (1, 2, 3, 4 etc.)
        (b) The lowest total of all the ranking positions from piping, drumming and ensemble wins first place, second lowest wins second place, third lowest wins third place, and so on.

D-16.2 More than One Performance. When a competition is based on more than one performance, the point system will be used as in D-16.1 above, and winning positions will be based on the lowest total of ranking points from all performances.
Ties are broken by lowest aggregate ensemble total. If a tie remains, it is broken by set ensemble.

D-16.3 Ties. All band ties are broken by ensemble. If a tie remains, it is broken by piping
        ...
D-16.5 Errors. Where an error is made in the calculation of prizes, the Society shall ensure that all legitimately won prize monies are paid within 14 days of the event and seek to recover prizes and monies awarded in error.

The final Judges tally as reported on the PPBSO website:

        Overall Totals
        1. City of Dunedin Pipe Band - Gr.1 Total 12, Ensemble Total 3, MSR Ensemble 1
        2. 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band - Gr.1 Total 12, Ensemble Total 3, MSR Ensemble 2
        3. 78th Highlanders (Halifax Citadel) Pipe Band - Gr.1 Total 24, Ensemble Total 6, MSR Ensemble 3

        Medley (P1, P2, D, E)

        1. City of Dunedin Pipe Band - Gr.1 (2, 1, 1, 1) Total 5
        2. 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band - Gr.1 (1, 2, 2, 2) Total 7
        3. 78th Highlanders (Halifax Citadel) Pipe Band - Gr.1 (3, 3, 3, 3) Total 12

        MSR (P1, P2, D, E)

        1. 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band - Gr.1 (1, 1, 1, 2) Total 5
        2. City of Dunedin Pipe Band - Gr.1 (2, 2, 2, 1) Total 7
        3. 78th Highlanders (Halifax Citadel) Pipe Band - Gr.1 (3, 3, 3, 3) Total 12

The error was that it was reportedly thought that the overall MSR result was the tie-breaker.

Since the overall totals are tied at 12, and the ensemble totals are tied at 3, then, under the mistaken thinking, the MSR total (5 vs 7) would give the 78th the win.

          Re: Maxville champions announcement kerfuffle

To be painstakingly more clear, based on my revised understanding:

D-16 Method of Determining Winning Positions in Contests

D-16.1 Ranking Method. Winning positions at all competitions shall be determined by a ranking method as follows:
          (a) Each Judge's preference will be ranked in order (1, 2, 3, 4 etc.)

          1. City of Dunedin Pipe Band - Gr.1 Total 12, Ensemble Total 2, MSR Ensemble 1
          2. 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band - Gr.1 Total 12, Ensemble Total 4, MSR Ensemble 2
          3. 78th Highlanders (Halifax Citadel) Pipe Band - Gr.1 Total 24, Ensemble Total 6, MSR Ensemble 3

          Medley (P1, P2, D, E)

          1. City of Dunedin Pipe Band - Gr.1 (2, 1, 1, 1) Total 5
          2. 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band - Gr.1 (1, 2, 2, 2) Total 7
          3. 78th Highlanders (Halifax Citadel) Pipe Band - Gr.1 (3, 3, 3, 3) Total 12

          MSR (P1, P2, D, E)

          1. 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band - Gr.1 (1, 1, 1, 2) Total 5
          2. City of Dunedin Pipe Band - Gr.1 (2, 2, 2, 1) Total 7
          3. 78th Highlanders (Halifax Citadel) Pipe Band - Gr.1 (3, 3, 3, 3) Total 12

The error was that it was reportedly thought that only the overall MSR result was the tie-breaker.

Since the overall totals are tied at 12, then, under the mistaken thinking, the MSR total (5 vs 7) would give the 78th the win.

However the ensemble totals should have been used, which would have given Dunedin the win.
