Yes, but I don't think Hamilton was nearly as strong last year as they are this year. Hell, two years ago they were in Grade 3. And one run doesn't necessarily make or break a band's quality level.

I have some old recordings of McNeilstown ... early to mid-1980s. Very good band ... nice sound!

Good luck in Scotland to LA ... one of my favourite bands.

Chris i don't plaqy for LA but i do know a few guys in there...i don't play for G1 now..

McNeilstown are on the way back...they just won the europeans in G3B... would love to see them back as a top band again..

Apologies to anyone i offended, i'm not really trying to pick on Oran Mor as a band, just think the whole set up of them going there to play in G2 is really silly..

by the way...i'm really hoping that SFU can list the title this year...just wanted to say that in case anyone's thinking i'm anti northern american bands..cause i'm def not..

I think that as pipe band enthusiasts here in North America we should support bands that can get over there and compete, regardless of our personal biases. Anything that boosts the pipe band image and helps promote good piping here in the states is a positive.

            1) on the PPBSO site... some of the results have all zeros.. like for the tenors... are those in the order they entered... or the order they placed?

2)Good luck Oran Mor - do well in Scotland... make us proud and show the world that you deserve all that you have worked for

Any more info on this? Any reports of how these people are doing? (or if it was only rumour?)

There was also an indication that there had been a problem with grade 4 results - was this in the prelimaries or finals?

                  GGS,

If youre not in a grade 1 band, then stop criticizing those who are. You are entitled to your opinion as is everyone else in here but youre nothing more than a Monday morning quarterback. And yes I do play with a grade 1 band. Maybe someday if you go home and practice you too can get off your soapbox and actually play in the circle. Have a nice day. Go get your chanter.

                    Re: Maxville Results?

Regarding Oran Mor, well, they had to start somewhere. It's highly doubtful that the EUSPBA would have promoted them to grade 1 had members of the grading committee honestly thought the band wasn't up to the "global" grade 1 standard. And the standard is so amazingly high now, compared with what it was when I started "seriously" listening to bands circa late 1970s. Let's face it, too, as impartial as the judges can be, there's an aspect of familiarity with long-time grade 1 (or whatever grade) bands that leads to a certain amount of grading on a curve. I prefer to believe it's not at all bias, just a "wow, they really improved their game from last year" kind of factor. But most of all there's the experience factor. Of COURSE SL-78th's or Toronto Polis are gonna hit the circle and dazzle -- they've been doing that since most of their current players were in diapers (or maybe at least long enough for many of their ex-players to be in diapers again). So, the Oran Moronians will take their lumps, for sure, but watch this space: In time, they will be a force to be reckoned with. I for one am extremely proud of what the band sounds like now; I definitely couldn't keep up with them these days! OK, enough, I have to go change my diaper....

                        GGS,

In my opinion your assessment of Oran Mor's results strikes me as a bit of a reach, considering the highlight of your piping career to date is 3rd place in the Grade IV 2/4 March in Costa Mesa this year.

Good job on that, and keep it up. That said, I would suggest you consider refraining from slagging highly regarded bands until maybe you've walked 1 of the thousands of miles those people have walked to get where they are now. I commend you on competing solos, it's a great way to get better. "Reality" is that you're still in the starting blocks of a marathon race that anyone good enough to play in a Grade I band has already run.

Also, it is considered proper form on our forum that, if you are going to take a stand and voice an opinion that might fan some flames, you do NOT take that stand behind a pseudonym and not sign your name at the bottom. (See below for more info.)

All the best to Oran Mor this year.

                        Jim Ryan

What an incredible day. Going on the field just as the rain started. People hit by lightning, People with broken legs due to slipping. Feeling the water flow through my shoes as I walked through the beer tent. Congratulations to Hamilton Police Grade 2, aswell as Hamilton Police Grade 4 and 5 best Drums and Bass.

Whew - good thing you didn't call them the "Oran Morons!"
