  • Patrick McDonal Highland Vocal Airs Audiobook

This week's episode of the Wetootwaag's Bagpipe and History Podcast is an audio book of Patrick McDonald’s 1784 Book, A Collection of Highland Vocal Airs. Patrick’s excellent collection of tunes begins with a preface written by Walter Young which discusses Patrick’s brother Joseph (author of Compleat Theory of the Scots Highland Bagpipe) as well as how Patrick and Joseph collected these tunes and some thoughts on how they should be played. There is then an essay “Of The Influence of Poetry and Music Upon the Highlanders” which was written by John Ramsay of Ochtertyre. The essay should be taken with a lot of salt but it is a fun window into an eighteenth century Scottish literati. If you are interested in participating in a book club style discussion of this text sometime next week, let me know.
