  • looking for information about Order of Scottish Clans

Hi Folks I haven't been here for a while , life has been pretty busy.... I am trying to locate e more information about the Organization of Scottish Clans (OSC) It was founded in the United States in the late 19th century and seems to have been a keen promoter of all things Scottish ..... I have a brooch with OSC engraved on the bottom and the OSC had a chapter in Pictou Nova Scotia but what about other areas of North America
    Cheers,
    Barry

I talk a bit about OSC in my book, "Clan Band: A Century of Piping, Drumming, Characters and Stories from Clan Macleay Pipe Band". There were chapters all over the US, starting at various times. In Portland, Oregon, the Clan Macleay Fraternal Organization, No. 122 of OSC, was founded in 1893. Besides helping Scottish immigrants to the area, they also sold insurance, and provided other services to such individuals.

This sounds a lot like the Sons of Scotland Benevolent Society that once spread across Canada. Each large city had one, named after a different clan.
I was in the pipe band of Camp Argyle Pipe Bands based in Ottawa. It recently closed shop, but the pipe band is still going strong.
The Montreal chapter sold their building last year, so they might now be gone too.
I vaguely heard rumors that they started by helping out Scottish immigrants to Canada, then later sold insurance of some sort.

Most likely very similar. I don't know about other chapters of OSC (or your SSBS), but for years after I joined my band (Clan Macleay), although our own entity, we were affiliated with the Clan Macleay Fraternal Organization, playing for their installation of new members, etc. But each year, there were less and less joining, and then there were no more installations at which we played. I assume it died out, any real purpose gone. In fact, all I ever saw the organization doing was having a Burns Dinner.
