Well,
I am seeking information regarding a painting made in the early 1800s depicting the Death of Sir John Moore in 1809 after his retreat to Corunna during the Peninsular War. Moore was a great friend to the Highland regiments serving in Spain and is creditied with, among other things, initiating the development of Light infantry units in the British army.
Unfortunately I do not have the name of the artist and I have tried checking with various War museums in Britain without much success. Perhaps someone on the group could t asssit me in locating the whereabouts of the painting or the name of the artist.
Moore has a Nova Scotian family connection and I have been told that one of the Napoleonic War veteran pipers who setlled in Nova Scotia actually posed for the artist before emigrating. Whether or not he was one of the Highlanders who carried Moore's injured body from the field is currently unknown.
This is proving to be a great forum for the exchange of information. Thanks Mario and Bob for suggesting it and setting it up.
