  • Practice Chanter Question. Specifically aimed towards reeds.

    Hey All,

I have a few PCs, and I get good tuning/tone from my poly McCallum. So I am good for a practice aspect. However, I have a pet project that I am working on and was wonering if you had any ideas on where I should go from here.

I have a Sinclair PC in Blackwood, that I ordered from the company back in 2010 timeframe. Beautiful PC. However, it has proven to be a BEAST to reed. Standard size chanter, currently seems to like a Warnock reed with a rubber band around the tongues. However that makes it extremely quiet.

Any other ideas? Do cane pc reeds still exist? Are they worth it?

    Try John Walsh reeds. Excellent.

The crucial thing we need to know here is the bore size. If you have a decent set of drills, try inserting them (wrong way round!) into the reed seat and see what the largest size that will slide in freely is, and the smallest size that won't.

Chris Apps still makes cane PC reeds. He’s also really good about answering questions and giving expert advice.

I love the Apps cane reed but it does take more care and maintenance than the plastic ones.

The scale is fine, it is just so quiet with the Warnocks. With a Hagen, the scale is definitely off.
