  • G1 Concert-B chanter?

Has anyone tried out the Concert B chanter from G1 as played by Ally the Piper? Sounds like a good compromise between Bb and the current dogwhistle pitch!

It does make sense, though what I would like to see is a really good A chanter.

I've previously made the suggestion that the RSPBA should pre-emptively ban pitch from going over 494, so that we just float up to B major and then stay there.

The current dog whistle pitch (480+) is flatter than B major (494) she's playing with. If we're going to sail up to B natural and above, we might as well just get Spanish Gaita chanters.
Playing the sharp 7th "lead note" can also usually be done with an easy reed on most chanters by playing o XXO XXX O. The fingering she was using is one I haven't seen.
To the credit of the B natural chanter, it would be a lot easier to sit in with the average guitarist than it would be to ask them to play a B flat without a capo. All said and done, I'd rather have a chanter and set of big pipes in A. The border pipes will have to do until then for me.

Before you start fixing problems with your reeds, check to see if the bag or stocks are leaking.

I am more likely to play bagpipes with brass bands and organs than with guitarists. I cn just imaging the reaction of the trumpets and clarinets when I say "right, now this next tune is in 7#s for you guys" I'll stick to Bflat, thanks.

Four sharps on a B chanter, not that much more demanding than the three flats of the B flat (Not that I don't agree in general; to me A and B flat feel like the useful keys).

I was watching Prince Charles (that is- the King) review the Royal something or other regiment- must have been from the 70's? (He was wearing a diced Glengarry but that's a different thread)

The brass band played with the pipes & drums for most of the parade and the pipe band did not rush around changing out chanters. It just made me nostalgic for the old sound and made me wonder who thought "playing together is rubbish- lets crank them up to 484 and beyond" I know I 've seen a discussion of the timeline here for when the "dog-whistle" began. It is a very strange thing that happened only in pipe band (as far as I know). I think pitch went up from the Baroque period to the Classical? Please correct me - I hit things with sticks to make a sound

Yes, when prior to the invention of the tuning fork there were periods of pitch creep where it increased at a very similar rate at modern pipe band pitch. We're not unusual, really.
