  • Bob, can we have our piccies back?

Pretty, pretty please. I have to confess I do miss the pictures that people used to be able to submit with their posts. It went a long way to making the place even more homely. (Hmmm, think we need a Grovelling Graemlin).

    Yes, I liked them too

But it started to become a daily problem - I was (it felt) constantly asking people to read our Rules, to limit the size of the images they added in their signatures. If we all had broadband, and high speed servers, it would not have been an issue.. but sadly - dial up is still the 'norm.

There is not any way I know to limit the image size - all I could do was ask, and that didn't work.. :humm:

    Sorry..

      What kind of pictures?

Pictures of the people posting or pictures related to the posting?

Just curious, because I am not savvy enough to create links (yet). :wink

        Hi Victoria,

There is a Forum option, that I had enabled for a time, that allowed members to add an image file to the signature that follows their forum posts.

For purposes of bandwidth, loading speed, and browser display formatting, I asked members to limit the display size and file size of these images.

        That didn't seem to work..

          Bob,

How about users are given very specific requirements for a "me" image (X pixels by Y pixels, jpeg, not to exceed 10K/whatever) that they can use to make up an image and send in? (Like you really want to get 1,800 jpeg files, right?) Maybe get someone to volunteer to act as a clearinghouse for the images. (Not me! I'm swamped. That's why I'm typing this at 12:35 in the morning.)

          Dreaming?

I was hoping I could get an image like you and Chris Hamilton, etc. I even made one up, added to my profile ("picture of you") and was disappointed when it didn't come up in my post under my name on the left. I misunderstood the concept.

Re: Bob, can we have our piccies back?

            Yes Andrew,

The image in the profile, as you found, is for the profile display only. The image in the signature file is the one being asked about here.. and that was the one where all the problems kept happening.. I had very specific sizes specified.. but (that didn't seem to help)..

The image under the name, on the left - I manually add those, and so far I have just done that for our moderators. I have been thinking I might do that for a few other folks (helpers, contest winners..??) but so far - I'm still thinking..

            Cheers,
            Bob

              Bob,

keep thinking about adding more pictures. I like connecting names and faces. I might actually recognize people from the forum next year at all the games!

I agree that is would be very cool if members could have a pic like the moderators. It would go far in connecting people in a real way. I know that I've had people recognize me at events from seeing my picture on our band website or from the Bagpipe Summer School website. It's always a surprise - but very cool to have someone come up to you and say - "I know you!"

Another idea: Create a special page where all the pics of the members can be seen.
Who wants can send his/her pic to Bob and he builds up a page with all the photos and forum names. Like the PPOD site.

Dude, there's a much better system in place. You can link to an image already from your profiles page.

If you want to know what someone looks like or want someone else to know what you look like, just set it up in your profile. Then in a forum you can just click on the person's profile icon and blammo, if they've set up an image, you see it. Plus you can change it on a whim.

The only improvement on that system that I see, is to load an image directly into the forum page. No loading other pages required. That's what Tammy and I are hoping for.

                      Hi Andrew and Tammy,

I'm guessing what you meant with the idea of:
... to load an image directly into the forum page. No loading other pages required. That's what Tammy and I are hoping for.
Is that the image would come from the forum server, rather than some other (your) server?

We already have days with data transfer of a gigabyte .

Imagine the potential impact of 15,000+ people loading an extra ??K just a few times a day :humm:

The scale of what we're doing here is pretty scary..

                        Hi Andrew

I know all that, and I know about Bob's scary visions about building up a backbone from his server to the rest of the world cause of the traffic.
But I was tired and my idea may not be so good as it seems when I wrote it down. I'd like also the idea to see a pic of everyone below theyr name. But it's not practical - and not necessary.
On the top you can see the answer, you said it.

Ah, what's another terrabyte or two?

I suppose the ideal would be a guardian of a non-Bob server that would determine whether a image meets specs or not then load it onto the server and give Bob the link to the image to load onto the forum page for the appropriate user.

                            Eep.

Ok, a bit of a headache.

Maybe not so great an idea, due to the "poo-poo heads" (quoting my daughter) who can't create an image to spec.

Andrew, I've got the feeling even if our pictures met specs they wouldn't meet specs. If you know what I mean. Half the fun of this medium is the letdown of actually meeting the person!
By the way, may I use that "Guardian of Non-Bob Servers" for my sig file? Thx!
